2009 at SAS Foundation is a year full of activity. This year alone we have the partnership launch with Patrons of Hoima district, the SAS Winner’s presidential election, a research team coming from the United States of America to evaluate the mentorship project and lastly the charity walk.
The 2nd of May 2009 a team of mentors and staff of SAS family have been specially invited by the area Member of parliament of Hoima district, Hon Beatrice Byenkya, to launch a partnership with patrons of Hoima district. A group called the MEETING POINT from Homa has invited SAS Foundation to come and discuss the necessity of mentorship in the fight against HIV/AIDS especially among children in the age group of 0-14 years.
6th June 2009 is the set date for the SAS Winner’s presidential elections. The Winners society is a forum in primary schools that brings children together to discuss their personal health, their family and community health. Their goal is to translate what is learned in class and in groups, into useful tools for the transformation of their wellbeing, their families and society.
Each primary school where mentorship operates has a winners Society group which,
- Elects officials headed by a president,
- General Secretary,
- Cabinet members
- They hold office for one year,
- The presidents elect the national president of the society.
- The national presidency is for two years term
Over 200 pupils are expected to attend the SAS Presidential elections this year. So far we have 40schools participating and each school has a nominee representing them. After the new president is elected the 1st and 2nd runner up will automatically fill up the positions of Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Further more we will be expecting 2researchers who will becoming to evaluate the mentorship project.
The last quarter of the year, SAS Foundation will hold the yearly Charity walk here in Kampala. On the 4th October 2008, SAS Foundation in partnership with the parliamentary committee on HIV/AIDS successfully participated in the Charity walk. The charity walk was organized to sensitize the public about the new intervention being implemented in primary Schools and to also raise local funding for the mentorship program.
As of 3th October 2009 we will be holding yet another Charity Walk here in Kampala. We are also expecting some of our partners especially from Oasis Christian Church, Baton Rouge Louisiana to come and participate in this year’s event.
SAS Clinic has opened up a fully fledged specialist center that is opened from 7pm to 9pm at Bombo Road. Presently we have the following specialists available:
1. Cardiology
2. OBG
3. Pediatrics
4. ENT
5. Full time counselor
Further more SAS Clinic has the radiologist department open full time. SAS Clinic has under taken on the responsibility of educating the community around us about different health issues like diabetic, health feeding. A group of staff have been going out to co-operate companies and the community providing literature about different healthy topics and also educating people about health. Soon SAS clinic will also be opening up a nutritional center at Bombo road that will assist in the spread of information.
