On 4th October, 2008, SAS Foundation in partnership with the parliamentary committee on HIV/AIDS successfully participated in the Charity walk. The charity walk was organized to sensitize the public about the new intervention being implemented in primary Schools and to also raise local funding for the mentorship program.
3000 Children and Teachers gathered at the Parliament parking yard where the flag off ceremony was held. There after we matched through the Parliamentary Avenue, Siad Barre Road and Jinja Road High way converging at the centenary park. On sport Registration of the children at the National Parliament building indicated that over 50 Schools out of 87 participating in the mentorship program, attended the charity walk. Infant and Nurseries were not allowed to participate in the charity walk because of their tender age.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Careful analysis of the activities of the recently organized SAS foundation Charity walk identifies the following achievements:
1. IBES was successfully introduced to the Legislators by the display of the IBES banner for three days at the entrance of the Parliamentary building;
2. By the joint address of the press on IBES concept and implementation, within the precinct of the parliament building itself;
3. Opportunity to address the entire committee of parliament on HIV/AIDS at their retreat meeting at Resort Hotel Entebbe;
4. Opportunity to gather members of winners society at the parliament grounds, and the flagging of the charity walk by the vice Chairperson , on the 4th October 2008;
5. The participation of the cabinet Minister as the chief walker, and addressing the nation on the Importance of IBES as an HIV preventive measures;
6. Getting the Ministry of Education’s endorsement for the charity walk through Kampala City Education Director;
7. Mobilization of over 3000 people for the charity walk on a weekend;
8. Being hosted on the popular Radio one spectrum after the charity walk;
9. Media attention and wide range of publicity during and after the charity walk.
10. The readiness of the schools to contribute funds by agreeing to buy T-shirts with our SAS Foundation logo, even though such contributions have officially been discouraged
APPRECIATIONS
We would like to thank all our partners for keeping us in their prayers and supporting the SAS Foundation Mentorship program. Many of SAS Foundation partners and SAS Family contributed both financially and physically to the success of the charity walk.
