THE FIRST MENTORSHIP TRAINNING IN THE USA

SAS Foundation held the first ever Mentorship Training in the United States from the 3rd to the 5th of May 2007. Mentorship is the provision of education through mentors to facilitate behavior change and consequently breaking down of HIV clusters in the institutions and communities.

 

The first training of mentors took place at Oasis Christian Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and was hosted by Pastor Charles E Wallace and Mrs. Gladys Wallace. There were a total of four trainers three of whom are based in Uganda and one based in the US. Dr. Andrew Kambugu of Infectious Disease Institute, Mr. Peter Echiba and Reverend Rubaiza Obed of SAS Foundation Uganda Limited are based in Uganda and Dr. Robert Muhumuza of SAS Foundation USA and president of SAS Foundation based in the US. Dr Moses Balabyeki, the Operations Director of the SAS Projects also helped to answer some of the medical questions.

 

27 mentors were trained and awarded certificates by State representative Regina Barrow at the end of the three day training session.27 mentors were awarded certificates at the end of the training by State representative Regina Barrow who graced the training with her presence.

 

 

Purpose of Training:

 

1. Start the mentorship program in the United States of America

2. Have mentors equipped before being deployed to schools

3. Work with Churches that embrace the mentorship program to reach out to their communities.

 

Achievements:

 

1.       Pr. Charles Wallace and the family of Oasis Christian Church took care of all the hosting costs of the training

2.       Pr. Charles and Mrs. Gladys Wallace were part of the mentors trained

3.       A Mentorship training handbook was compiled and handed to the mentors

4.       27 mentors attended the training

5.       7 Churches sent mentors for training

6.       All the training sessions where very educative and informative

7.       At least 10 questions where asked per presentation

8.       Dr. Moses Balabyeki helped answer some of the medical questions

9.       The quality of the DVD presentations was good

10.   The questions asked where all answered satisfactorily

11.   State Representative Regina Barrow graced the training with her presence and awarded certificates to the mentors at the end of the training

12.   The mentors made a donation of $906.00 to SAS Foundation

 

 

Special thanks to Pr. Charles E. and Gladys Wallace, and the entire Oasis Christian Church staff and family for hosting the first ever HIV/AIDS mentorship training organized by SAS Foundation USA.

 

It was a very successful and well attended training. It has given us a good foundation for the Mentorship Training programs that will be taking place in the United States of America.
