JUBA FACT FINDING MISSION JULY 2006
8/3/2006

Juba is the Capital City of Southern Sudan (The New Sudan). The population is not known as there has been no census since the late 1980’s according to one of the residents. The Country has just come out of war and the infrastructure is extremely poor and the few structures in place are those run by NGO’s. The roads are gravel except one, the one from the airport that stretches to the government offices and is not devoid of pot-holes. Moving through the city reminds one of Uganda in the mid-80’s.

Juba is along the river Nile and so the vegetation of the area is similar to that of Uganda.  It is relatively hotter with high temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius during summer (August – December) according to one of the residents.  The people are friendly though poor.  Most of the food stuffs and other goods are from Uganda and some from Kenya.

There is one Hospital which is run by the State but in a very bad shape.  Clinics are very few and according to one of the Doctors the best clinic is St. Luke Episcopal Clinic.

We were warmly received by the His Grace the Archbishop of the Episcopal Church of the Sudan and his team.  The Archbishop expressed his delight in having SAS Organization to help the people of Southern Sudan in the medical field.  We were also warmly received by His Excellency the Minister of Health Central Equatorial State-Juba, who after listening to our presentation expressed the same view as the Archbishop. We then asked him about the protocols we needed to fulfill to function. He told us there were various ways that foreign investors and NGO’s can use to function, one of them is to work with the Church which according to him is recognized as part of Government.

The Archbishop agreed to give us a letter of recommendation to the Minster of Health a copy of which is attached.

We visited the Church land which is 6km’s from Juba town located at Lologo close to the banks of the River Nile and is about 15 acres in size.  The Episcopal Church of the Sudan would like us to partner with them to uplift St. Luke’s Episcopal clinic, set up a medical center, and a hospital to provide quality medical services.

We are currently working on the necessary paper work to achieve the objectives of SAS in Sudan and we regard our Mission a success.
