Our main objective was to train and equip HIV Positive people with knowledge and skills to go out to the community as agents of change to help shrink and break the HIV/AIDS clusters.
Uganda as we all know has been one of the countries at the forefront in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The success story in reducing the prevalence from about 20% in the 80’s, to the present 7% was attributed to the political will of her leaders and the ABC strategy.
However, the prevalence has stagnated around 6% and this probably calls for newer prevention measures. Through the Discipleship Program our strategy is to involve HIV positive people who will be trained and equipped with skills to go out into their communities to act as agents of change in various institutions including schools, churches, markets, and their work places
The first “Discipleship” training program started on Monday 2nd May 2005 and it was opened by Honorable Beatrice Byenkya (Woman Member of Parliament Hoima District).
The scope of the program included 3 main areas;
1) Basic HIV Information.
2) Counseling.
3) Discipleship/ Community strategy.
The course duration was 8 weeks with 28 contact hours.
A total of fifty five “Disciples” enrolled including one from Sweden. These “Disciples” were awarded Certificates of attendance which were handed to them in by The Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on HIV/AIDS, Hon Dr. J. R. Bulamu on Saturday 02nd July 2005.
We shall deploy these “Disciples” from 01st August 2005 to 30th September 2005 in Kampala and Wakiso districts. They shall be in the field for three days each week during this period.
